With the emergence of ChatGPT and other AI tools in 2022, we are seeing the impact these tools can have on individual job roles and entire industries. While AI has not entered into the NonStop space just yet, it is still something we as technologists and self-proclaimed nerds are watching from a distance.

With his opening words, “It’s not where we are headed but how fast we will get there,” the boss of all things NonStop, Jeff Kyle, set the tone for the latest NonStop Technical Boot Camp (NonStop TBC 22). “We are a platform and not a server; the platform we are perfecting for mission critical applications. We create the data and we transact the data!”

NonStop TBC 2022 kicked off a new round of modernization with a friendly competition to come up with a sustainable design to replace SCOBOL requesters with the latest and greatest tech available on and off NonStop.

Red Link is the biggest transactional switch in Argentina, processing transactions from ATMs and digital wallets. Red Link is owned by a group of public and private banks that service most of Argentina’s population. Red Link processes more than 47 million transactions per day during their peak time of year. They are interconnected with 60 financial institutions and have more than 1,000 employees, with a large team focused on the HPE NonStop, as it is the primary system used for their transactions.

Ernest “Ernie” Guerrera, founder of NuWave Technologies and treasured long-time member of the HPE NonStop community, passed away recently and left many friends and loved ones behind. He touched many lives with his kindness, his words of wisdom, and his sense of humor. In the NonStop industry, as elsewhere, Ernie was admired, well-respected, and is remembered fondly.

APIs have seen fast growth and adoption for many years now; as of 2020, it was estimated that there are over 24,000 APIs in use, just in the financial industry. While the number of APIs used is increasing, the more important statistic is the value these APIs bring to businesses. Services offered by APIs now account for 75% of many large companies’ revenue. For example, Salesforce generates 50% of its revenue through RESTful APIs, eBay 60%, and Expedia generates 90% of its total revenue through the use of APIs. Without the help of RESTful APIs, these companies might cease to exist.

In an enterprise, there are many different data sources that are produced and consumed in many different departments. Instead of being tied to the proprietary access of each database, the use of a web service API will make integration with these myriad of data sources much easier. RESTful web services will provide a data access layer that’s more flexible and compatible with different applications, including mobile, web or cloud services. Many database vendors now provide access to their databases using RESTful APIs. They include Oracle, and MS SQL Server, the two leading databases in the marketplace.

REST has become the standard for information exchanged between disparate platforms and applications within the enterprise. In the NonStop space it is being used more and more, to allow NonStop applications to communicate with other enterprise applications, and integrate with solutions outside the enterprise.

How can companies help their team members to adapt to a completely virtual work environment while helping them to cope with the added stress that a pandemic and a complete upheaval of their lives brings? Over the past several months, we have all experienced additional challenges as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. In some families, both spouses experienced “going virtual” together, while others had the added anxiety of being an essential worker. Add children to the mix, now with ever-fluctuating school schedules, and it becomes easy to understand how impactful Coronavirus has been on employees’ mental health and morale. It has become clear that employers must adapt to these changes and engage with employees to develop long-term plans to improve morale and productivity while ensuring a healthy work/life balance.

One of the main trends highlighted in our recent article The Top 5 Trends in REST Services relates to payment applications, and in particular, simplifying access to legacy payments applications like BASE24 and Connex, both of which are still very popular on the HPE NonStop platform.

Here at NuWave Technologies, we’re always working with forward-thinking HPE NonStop server users looking to modernize or simplify access to their valuable NonStop applications and data. We’re also tracking trends outside the NonStop space, in an effort to ensure our LightWave solutions stay current with industry requirements and trends.

HPE has been working on some exciting new use cases for HPE NonStop, and so has NuWave Technologies. These cases are either currently being applied, or could easily be applied in the near future, in the healthcare sector.

When we write up our end-of-year reflections at NuWave, we usually look back fondly on that year’s tradeshows and user group meetings around the world, the friendly faces we’ve seen, and the boisterous dinners with partners, customers, and friends in the HPE NonStop space. This year has of course been vastly different from previous years, with little face-to-face interaction of any sort. The year has not been without its bright spots, though.
