HPE Servers
A Note From Connect Leadership
Marty EdelmanWith fingers crossed it looks like most of the world is digging out from the pandemic and beginning to contemplate life in a post-covid world. Things will probably never go back to the way they were before but one of the constant in this world is that you either evolve or die. We at Connect choice to evolve (as I hope you do too) and have been busy at work on the NonStop Bootcamp which will be a great show this year. We have an amazing new venue in Denver in a great part of town to ensure that there is plenty to see and do.

Justin SimondsExpanding NonStop Opportunities
Ron ThompsonWith the value of data losing value in seconds, minutes or hours – time is of the essence to maximize data value to improve decision making – with immediate insights, to add intelligence to processes, create opportunities, etc. For those interested in meaningfully improving outcomes by maximizing data value and innovating for impact – these are core ingredients for success in an on-line, real-time, all-the-time world.
Virtualized NonStop adoption is growing. Here’s what you should know if you’re planning for one
Prashanth Kamath USince the origin of computing, innovation has been happening in broadly two areas – 1) Technology – silicon, circuits, storage and so forth, aptly captured by “Moore’s law”, and 2) software – operating system, application, virtualization and the like. While these two areas continue to evolve, although at a slower pace than earlier, the last decade brought in another dimension to the innovation phenomenon –acquisition and consumption. Until the first decade of the 21st century, computing infrastructure was all captive. Companies built sprawling datacenters to house their IT infrastructure, managed by their staff – highly skilled to run operations and keep the “lights on”, if you will.
One of Thailand’s Largest Bank Implements PCI Compliant Data Protection on Countrywide Banking Network
Thomas GloerfeldThis Bank has the largest network of ATMs and branches in Thailand, with nearly 6,000 ATMs and over 1,000 branches throughout the country. They handle the travel, capital accumulation, and home deposit savings of millions of citizens. The Bank’s total assets amount to 2.62 trillion baht (THB), equivalent to approximately 80 billion USD, and in 2014 it had an operating income of 26.9 billion baht or approximately 826 million USD.
Virtualization; a world without limits now embraced by NonStop!
Richard BuckleVirtualization, and the support of virtual operating systems, has been a part of IT for a very long time. The concepts are pretty simple; I/O has been much slower than main memory so actions taken by the processor have happened more quickly than actions directed at storage. This resulted in a lot of processor wait time and processor time was viewed as expensive; what could we do while we waited? Initially this lead to the creation of a number of partitions all sharing virtual storage (VS) so much so that it wasn’t unusual to find large systems running five, seven, twelve and more partitions that, in the case of IBM mainframes, broke processing down into online and batch.
PCI DSS 4.0
Steve TcherchianSince the release of PCI-DSS 3.0 in 2013, the PCI Security Standards Council has been quite busy. A little over a year after it was published, the council released PCI-DSS 3.1, followed by several new templates and supplements, including the “Migrating from SSL and early TLS Information Supplement” in April 2015 which highlighted the risks of SSL and TLS 1.0. The supplement described a migration plan as well as set a migration deadline of 1 July, 2016.

Dr. Heinz-Hermann AdamThe World of HPE NonStop Engineering
Stan KosinskiBy removing the barrier of distance, the Internet has transformed how we obtain information, make purchases, and conduct business. It has enabled HPE to bring together the best and brightest engineering talent, regardless of location, to produce the world class availability and integrity that defines NonStop computing. One could say that the distributed capabilities of the NonStop system are reflected in how the engineering staff work through connections spanning the globe. To borrow from a famous quote, the sun never sets on NonStop engineering!
The Power of NonStop Data Analytics
Joel SandbergTwenty years ago, data analytics was a field reserved for geeks and academics, something discussed during breaks in lectures on chaos theory. The idea was to take a very random system, with lots of seemingly disparate data, and be able to tie that tangled web of data together so that meaningful outcomes could be predicted. The most obvious example is weather forecasting, which involves analyzing all the earth’s atmospheric randomness in terms of ever-changing temperature, moisture, and wind, somehow using that data to tell people to bring an umbrella to that 1 pm picnic a week from Saturday.
Systems and Platforms: the lines in the sand.
Richard BuckleBefore we begin to look at HPE NonStop platform updates becoming available in 2021 it’s probably a good idea to take a step back and look at exactly what constitutes a platform. Like with every opinion, everyone has their own take on what constitutes a platform. It was so much easier when we all understood what was a computer, an operating system or an application but of late, the lines have become less clear. Can we still draw meaningful lines or have they become lines in the sand, subject to change every time a breeze disturbs their presence.

News from HPE’s NonStop Division
Karen CopelandAs we near the end of the year, it’s clear that 2020 will live in infamy for many years to come. Between the COVID-19 pandemic, with a devastating loss of life now reaching 200,000 people in the United States, to terrifying weather such as lightning strike storms, temperatures reaching 130 degrees in Death Valley, massive forest fires in the West, hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, floods in the South and even a fire tornado being sighted in Northern California, we often feel like we’re living in a horror or disaster movie.

News from HPE’s NonStop Division
Karen CopelandA year ago, none of us could have foreseen the type of year 2020 has turned into with most of the country sheltering at home or just starting to reopen businesses but when venturing out, wearing masks as we try to go about our lives during the worldwide COVID 19 pandemic. I’m proud to say that HPE has been very good in moving all employees to work from home, checking in and keeping everyone informed as to the latest information from our governments and the company’s future plans within those guidelines. And we expect HPE to very slowly begin reopening some of our business sites over the summer. Before we start talking about the NonStop business and events, I’d like to take a moment to send all of you, our customers, partners and friends around the world our best wishes for your personal good health and the good health of your families during this time of social distancing and uncertainty. As things start to reopen again, we hope you are continuing to take appropriate measures to keep yourselves healthy and safe.
NonStop Forward
by Phil Ly
Phil Ly As we’ve been thinking more about the future of NonStop in this newly established column, an item of real concern has been how to continue to build community among vendors and customers, in the absence of users group gatherings. With most companies, including TIC Software, working remotely, how do we reach across the screen, so to speak, to cultivate key personal relationships?
NonStop Trends & Wins
by Justin Simonds
Justin Simonds If you follow my column (and if you do, thank you), you know that I tend to favor the ‘Trends’. I confess the technology does hold more fascination for me but it is high time to discuss some NonStop success. Now, first off, NonStop is a unit inside Mission-critical systems which is a business unit inside High Performance Computing which all rolls up to Compute within HPE which is still just one of several major business divisions. I say this because I don’t want the percentages I am going to disclose to be interpreted as a recommendation to buy or to not buy HPE stock. That would be between you and your financial broker. Also the percentages I am discussing refer, this issue, to North America. So that being said and without disclosing any real numbers I am okay in relaying that so far this year NonStop is about 15% up revenue-wise over last year (Y/Y). This quarter NonStop is up over 30% (Q/Q). And for the year so far we are tracking over budget. So wins are definitely happening. Since I do not have customer permission to disclose any specific names let me just say that major banks, major retailers and major credit card companies continue to be pleased and are investing in their NonStop mission-critical systems. The x86 platform systems are the predominant platform that is selling, and the latest systems (HPE Gen 10 or for us X-3) takes full advantage of the HPE silicon root of trust, making it the most secure x86 architecture available. See this article on HPE cyber security or search the website for Cybersecurity or silicon root of trust. Pretty cool stuff. If you have an existing Gen 8 or 9 system (X-1 or X-2) you may consider a processor swap to the latest Gen 10 (X-3) processors. They are faster and have the added security built in (see link above). If you saw my last article on the old syndromic surveillance pilot, I am happy to say that there is renewed interest in that solution both in the United States and overseas. We are seeing the criticality of systems as Covid-19 is cresting in the United States and starts, hopefully, to begin to decline.
NonStop Pride in the Great State of Texas
Diane FunkhouserThe maximum speed limit in Texas is 85 mph. Maybe not everything moves fast in Texas, but cars and trucks certainly do. Perhaps it is just due to the geography. There is a lot of area to cover in the vast state of Texas. It is the largest state in the Continental US, although Alaska is 2.2 times larger by area, and Texas is second to California by population. The GDP of Texas is $1.6 trillion, comparable to Russia, South Korea, Tokyo or New York City.
A Successful NonStop Webinar on SQL/MX for Japanese customers
Hewlett Packard EnterpriseIn Japan, a lot of companies are working from home since the end of March when COVID-19 became more serious, and sales activities have been restricted. Under such circumstances, we held a Webinar on April 22nd promoting the NonStop database “SQL/ MX” so customers could participate from home. The Seminar title is “A recipe of system construction that never stops business”, and introduced how to build a system that cannot be stopped by using the NonStop Database.
