The Many Roads to Data Protection

Thomas Gloerfeld

Getting from point A to point B in a car always seems to be a pretty easy proposition, at least until you’re behind the wheel and moving. On a map, look for the largest road(s) with the greatest bandwidth capacity, which in the US usually means a highway or interstate, and just take that route. If one road meeting this criteria doesn’t exist, then cobble together a series of them following this general pattern (biggest roads with the most capacity), and you’re still good, right?

XYPRO Cybersecurity Predictions for 2022

Steve Tcherchian

Well, we made it. 2021 is finally in the books. The gift of LOG4J and the onslaught of vendor emails made for an eventful end to 2021. Take a minute (and I only mean a minute) to catch your breath before we jump headfirst into 2022. It’s time to look forward to what the cybersecurity landscape will give us this year.

In Memory of Janice Reeder-Highleyman

Gravic, Inc.

Janice Reeder-Highleyman, 69, passed away on January 2, 2022 due to a long illness. She was intensely private and never wanted to talk much about herself. Most of us in the Connect Community had no idea that she was bravely battling Stage IV ovarian cancer.  And, she didn’t want much of a fuss made after her passing.

NonStop TBC21 returns as virtual event and reality sets in!

Richard Buckle

This year, as was the case last year, the annual NonStop Technical Boot Camp 2021 (NonStopTBC21) became a virtual experience. No surprises really about this even as many members of the NonStop community held out in the hope that it would be a return to an in-person event. No surprises too that even with the lateness of the transition to virtual, along with the promotion of the event being free of charges for attendees, there were 1,000 participants maybe more.

NuWave Prizm Gateway™: The Best of NonStop Integration Is Just Getting Started

Dave Belliveau

APIs have seen fast growth and adoption for many years now; as of 2020, it was estimated that there are over 24,000 APIs in use, just in the financial industry. While the number of APIs used is increasing, the more important statistic is the value these APIs bring to businesses. Services offered by APIs now account for 75% of many large companies’ revenue. For example, Salesforce generates 50% of its revenue through RESTful APIs, eBay 60%, and Expedia generates 90% of its total revenue through the use of APIs. Without the help of RESTful APIs, these companies might cease to exist.

HPE NonStop NSGit: Integrated Enterprise Software Management

Randall Becker

As we integrate technology in the enterprise, we see tendrils of GUARDIAN code extending outward to OSS, Windows, Linux, Mac, and towards edge computing. Components like JSON definitions and libraries are starting to be use everywhere – you only want to write your message parser once so that everyone gets the same view. We also see components from other platforms starting to inject themselves into GUARDIAN as we modernize and publish services from our mission critical legacy applications to services elsewhere.

XYPRO – Best of NonStop 2021

Steve Tcherchian

Have we become numb to the news of security breaches? Unfortunately, the attacks on our businesses, personal lives and even global infrastructure are not slowing down. Cybercrime is up over 600% during the pandemic. According to Verizon’s 2021 Data Breach Investigation Report, 61% of cyberattacks targeted credential theft. This far surpasses personal, banking and payment card information which have been primary targets for years. The cybersecurity industry has responded with a variety of ways to protect sensitive data with regulations, technology, and awareness, which has forced attackers to look for easier targets, such as usernames and passwords.

Configuring your data for productivity vs security: A balancing act!

Roland Lemoine

I used to think that applying security is good as long as it does not get in the way of productivity. After all, isn’t the whole purpose of IT to improve productivity, so anything going against that golden rule is at least questionable? If security is an obstacle to productivity then it defeats the whole purpose of IT being at the service of humans and it should not be the other way around.

Securing The Future Of NonStop

Henry Fonseca

It’s hard to believe that 2021 is almost over. Most of us are still getting used to our post-pandemic lives. And as life slowly returns to normal, we should take a moment to reflect on the challenges and successes of the past year. The end of the year is always a great opportunity to look ahead and set goals for the future. And I am not just talking about those pesky New Year’s resolutions that we quickly forget once February comes along.

uLinga for Kafka – EMS Use Case

Andrew Price

In the Sept-Oct 2021 edition of The Connection, we gave an overview of Kafka, and how it is being used by many Fortune 500 companies to manage “streams” of data, which have become prevalent as internet usage massively boosts the amount of data being generated, and requiring processing. Kafka allows these huge volumes of data to be processed in real-time, via a combination of “producers” and “consumers”, which work with a Kafka “cluster” – the main data repository.
