HPE NonStop users are becoming more familiar with Kafka, as Kafka in turn becomes more and more prevalent inside those large environments where the NonStop platform is often present.  Kafka is being used by thousands of companies, including 60% of the Fortune 100. 

Reviewing the topics that were covered at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in January is a good way to get some highlights not only on what some of the current world challenges are but also to realize how those are so closely connected to the great challenges of our IT industry.

In the Sept-Oct 2021 edition of The Connection, we gave an overview of Kafka, and how it is being used by many Fortune 500 companies to manage “streams” of data, which have become prevalent as internet usage massively boosts the amount of data being generated, and requiring processing. Kafka allows these huge volumes of data to be processed in real-time, via a combination of “producers” and “consumers”, which work with a Kafka “cluster” – the main data repository.

One of the best ways to modernize NonStop is to integrate its applications with other software, platforms and cloud services. This interoperability is extremely important as it will extend the value of the NonStop applications, and underscore the flexibility of the platform in the enterprise.

There’s been a lot of talk over the last few years about Kafka, but what is it, and how might it impact NonStop applications and data? According to the Kafka Apache project, Kafka is “the most popular open-source stream-processing software for collecting, processing, storing and analyzing data at scale.” Kafka is used by thousands of companies, including 60% of the Fortune 100. Well known users in the finance space include Goldman Sachs, Rabobank, Barclays, Jack Henry and PayPal, and household names that use Kafka include Netflix, Oracle, LinkedIn and AirBnB.

One of the main trends highlighted in our recent article The Top 5 Trends in REST Services relates to payment applications, and in particular, simplifying access to legacy payments applications like BASE24 and Connex, both of which are still very popular on the HPE NonStop platform.

REST has become the de facto standard for information exchange between disparate platforms and applications. In the NonStop space it is being used more and more, to allow NonStop applications to communicate with other enterprise applications, and integrate with solutions outside the enterprise.
