In my previous article, Thinking of Migrating During a Pandemic?, I wrote about how impressed I was with the different IT initiatives and buzz of activity that increased from the pandemic. Situations like this pandemic truly highlight how much we all take technology for granted, and how interwoven our lives have become.

COVID-19 and its security ramifications continue in 2021 and well beyond. All of the threats brought to the fore when we were sent to work from home got added to the already-growing set of risks we were already trying to mitigate.

Before we begin to look at HPE NonStop platform updates becoming available in 2021 it’s probably a good idea to take a step back and look at exactly what constitutes a platform. Like with every opinion, everyone has their own take on what constitutes a platform. It was so much easier when we all understood what was a computer, an operating system or an application but of late, the lines have become less clear. Can we still draw meaningful lines or have they become lines in the sand, subject to change every time a breeze disturbs their presence.

HPE has been working on some exciting new use cases for HPE NonStop, and so has NuWave Technologies. These cases are either currently being applied, or could easily be applied in the near future, in the healthcare sector.

In past years, prior to deploying an application, significant time and effort was expended in gathering requirements to produce a design. The design was completed up front, before any code was written or database schema created. Furthermore, the design was comprehensive and static – it was expected to be viable for years without requiring significant modifications. When changes eventually were needed, they became a major redesign effort that often impacted multiple facets of the application and database. None of this was completed quickly, or without risk.

With 2020 finally, in the books, it’s time to look forward and discuss our cybersecurity predictions that will most affect the industry in 2021. I thought long and hard about what I could say that would be impactful and hasn’t been said before.  Obviously, COVID-19 and its security ramifications will continue to stay with us for 2021 and well beyond.

Trying to change the IT (Information Technology) infrastructure is hard at the best of times, but the coronavirus pandemic has ironically helped IT departments to do just that. In many cases, the pandemic has helped to accelerate IT transformation projects. 2020 was another troubling year in the cybersecurity world. We saw a repeat of 2019’s data breaches on a larger scale. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Nintendo, WaWa and many more fell victim to some sort of compromise. Hardly a week went by where we weren’t reading about a new mega breach or ransomware attack.

We are truly amazed by the number of IT system migrations that are now occurring around the globe! In the strangest of times – during a pandemic – we find HPE NonStop technologists and system engineers practicing their craft. We see a surprising trend: IT teams honing their focus on new features while ramping up business continuity improvement projects, which is an inspiring and strategic move.

How long has it been since you upgraded your NonStop’s operating system? One year? Five years? Fifty years? You have no idea? Don’t feel embarrassed if you answered anything but “A.” You’re not alone. Many companies that operate within the NonStop environment have chosen not to upgrade their OS for a variety of reasons. When we write up our end-of-year reflections at NuWave, we usually look back fondly on that year’s tradeshows and user group meetings around the world, the friendly faces we’ve seen, and the boisterous dinners with partners, customers, and friends in the HPE NonStop space. This year has of course been vastly different from previous years, with little face-to-face interaction of any sort. The year has not been without its bright spots, though.
