Announcing HPE Shadowbase Zero Data Loss – Synchronous Replication Technology

Shadowbase | Zero Data Loss

Gravic announces the General Availability of HPE Shadowbase ZDL software in Version 7.000 for HPE NonStop Servers.

Consistent access to real-time, online transactional data is a competitive advantage. To realize this advantage, the data must be current and available across an enterprise at all times. Otherwise, the inability to access or update, or the loss of this data carries significant potential business costs: up to thousands of dollars per second loss of brand reputation, regulatory fines, and other unforeseen consequences that could be prevented.

Shadowbase Zero Data Loss (ZDL) guarantees that all committed data changes made on one system are replicated to a backup system. Therefore, unplanned system outages never result in lost data, and a business will never face these costs or trying to recover lost data. Shadowbase ZDL uses synchronous replication, which avoids data loss for active/passive architectures, and eliminates all possibility of data loss.

Familiar conversations in the office

Does the following conversation seem familiar?

  • Come in.
  • What’s the problem?
  • I’m getting calls from angry customers complaining about their account data…why is that?
  • Hmm, I suspect it’s because we lost some data.
  • Lost data?! I thought we had an online data replication solution in place so we would always have a backup copy of our latest data!
  • Even with it, it’s still possible to lose some data when an outage occurs. Worse, boss, we really don’t know what data we lost, so we are trying to recover it from old backups and printed reports…
  • Really?! I had no idea. Some of our customer’s data is extremely valuable, and we cannot afford to lose any of it!
  • Sorry, I don’t know what we can do to prevent that.

Data loss

One of the most significant costs incurred by IT outages is data loss. Now, there is something you can do to prevent that: protect your data with cutting-edge software, Shadowbase Zero Data Loss (ZDL).

Replication Latency

With most business continuity solutions that rely on data replication, there is still the possibility of data loss when an unplanned outage occurs. This data loss is caused by replication latency. Replication latency occurs when the application changes data on the source and that data has not yet been sent to the target, and therefore can be lost when a failure occurs.

What does data loss mean in the real-world

What does data loss mean in the real-world? It means that companies that lost critical data closed their doors for good, or, if they survived, they suffered millions of dollars of revenue loss and faced major repercussions, such as:

  • embarassing news headlines,
  • consumer doubt in the brand and company,
  • customers switching to competitors,
  • regulatory fines and violations,
  • loss of investor confidence,
  • and even threats to human health and safety.

With Shadowbase ZDL software, these problems are avoided, and the business is saved from the costly impacts of data loss.

Shadowbase ZDL

Shadowbase ZDL is based on a unique and patented synchronous replication technology. It ensures that all database changes made on a source system are successfully replicated to the target system before the source application is allowed to commit those changes. If the source system fails, all committed data changes are saved right where Shadowbase ZDL replication put them – safe and sound on the target system!

Fie recovery

Unlike some synchronous replication products, Shadowbase ZDL does not require any specific disk technology, and there are no imposed distance limitations or specific communicatons technology required between the source and target systems.

Shadowbase Business Continuity Continuum

Shadowbase ZDL is currently available for HPE NonStop systems, for both business continuity and data integration environments, and supports uni-directional and bi-directional data replication, as well as other replication architectures.

NonStop Transaction Monitoring Facility (TMF)

Shadowbase ZDL leverages the NonStop Transaction Monitoring Facility (TMF), to provide transactional services. Unaudited applications without TMF can be protected with Shadowbase ZDL when using the HPE NonStop AutoTMF facility. Moreover, AutoTMF does not require any application code changes and can actually improve overall system performance and reduce response times over a non-audited environment.  For more information, please see our white paper, Debunking TMF NonStop Data Protection Myths..
