The Challenge
Enterprises today generate more data than ever before, yet much of it remains trapped, locked away in isolated applications, systems, or databases.
This “trapped data” prevents organizations from realizing its full potential, leaving valuable insights unused and business opportunities untapped.
The Opportunity
Data Integration and Application Integration (DIAI) helps organizations unlock the full potential of their information. By linking existing applications and databases with newer platforms, businesses can break down data silos and put all of their resources to work together. This enables them to streamline operations, make decisions with greater confidence, and quickly develop new services that add value for customers and stakeholders.
How DIAI Works
DIAI solutions, such as Shadowbase Solutions for HPE Nonstop Software, unlock the full potential of enterprise data by:
- Data Integration (DI): Replicating, transforming, and cleansing data across heterogeneous platforms, so it is immediately available for analytics, reporting, or cloud services.
- Application Integration (AI): Enabling event-driven and real-time architectures that connect disparate applications without requiring code changes, powering solutions like decision support systems, real-time fraud detection, and operational alerts.
- Event-Driven Architectures (EDA): Acting on data changes the moment they occur, populating online data warehouses, data marts, and operational data stores, or feeding cloud-based services.
Together, these capabilities ensure that both strategic and tactical data are fully utilized, empowering businesses to adapt quickly and stay competitive.
A Real-World Example
One European steel tubing manufacturer demonstrates the power of DIAI in action. Their production system ran on HPE Nonstop, but reporting queries ran periodically on Linux servers. Since the reporting application used a nonstandard interface into the Nonstop database, the reports needed to heavily transform the non-relational Enscribe database information into a usable format, requiring transmission of the data across the network for each report run.
The remote query activity was increasing and started interfering with operational processing on the Nonstop system. This nonstandard interface architecture was susceptible to network failures, timeouts, and/or slowdowns when operating at full capacity, causing issues with shop floor performance. By implementing Shadowbase DIAI solutions, the company offloaded reporting from the Nonstop environment to a commodity-based reporting environment. The new architecture efficiently cleaned, normalized, and replicated the data across the network only once, instead of each time a query/report ran, enabling real-time access to operational insights.
The result? Critical reporting became faster and more reliable, without slowing down production. Management gained actionable insights, operations became more efficient, and the business could innovate without being limited by its architecture.
The Bigger Picture
As this example illustrates, DIAI is not just about solving one company’s challenge. It is a strategic framework for unlocking trapped data, consolidating enterprise information, and enabling the creation of new services that drive measurable business value.
With DIAI, trapped data becomes a springboard for innovation, fueling smarter operations and future-proofing enterprise IT strategies.
