Union Bank of Taiwan (UBOT), through its Union Information Technology Center (UITC), has achieved a landmark transformation in payments modernization. In partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) GreenLake and OmniPayments, UBOT has replaced
its legacy COSES system with the next-generation OmniPayments Switch running on HPE Nonstop.
This initiative was not simply a technical upgrade, it was a strategic leap towards innovation, resilience, and technological independence.
Meeting the Demands of a Mobile-First Economy
Taiwan’s rapid shift to a mobile and digital-first payments landscape created new
challenges:
- Increasing transaction volumes from e-commerce, POS, and ATM channels
- Real-time demand peaks during events like shopping festivals and ticket sales
- The need to integrate seamlessly with both domestic and international networks
To address these, UBOT and UITC required a highly scalable, customizable, and future-ready platform.
Why OmniPayments + HPE Nonstop GreenLake
OmniPayments Switch was selected for its modular design, open APIs, and compliance with PCI DSS v4.0 standards. Combined with the proven non-stop operation, near-linear scalability, and absolute data integrity of HPE Nonstop servers, UBOT gained a system capable of:
- Processing transactions across 50,000+ merchants and 90,000+ terminals
- Routing seamlessly to UBOT’s in-house authorizer or the national switch (NCCC)
- Launching new payment products in days instead of months
- Achieving full operational independence through training and technology transfer
Collaboration That Delivered
This project succeeded because of close collaboration:
- UITC’s visionary leadership, ensuring alignment with strategic banking goals
- OmniPayments’ expertise, delivering 50+ customizations and knowledge transfer to UBOT staff
- HPE Taiwan and Asia Pacific teams, providing unmatched support and integration expertise
As a result, UBOT now operates one of Taiwan’s most advanced, resilient, and customer centric payment systems, positioning the bank as a leader in financial innovation.
Building Trust Through Security and Compliance
In addition to performance, the solution reinforces UBOT’s strong stance on risk management and fraud prevention. OmniPayments’ real-time fraud detection and monitoring dashboards, combined with UBOT’s robust governance, ensure safer transactions and greater consumer confidence.
Looking Ahead
For OmniPayments, this achievement in Taiwan is more than a success story, it is a demonstration of how partnership, innovation, and trust can redefine financial services. Together with HPE GreenLake, we remain committed to empowering financial institutions worldwide with the mission-critical payment solutions they need for the digital era.
