Events and conferences develop their own momentum. Whether they begin with a beer bust the evening before the start of the event or simply follow the first keynote address, all good events seem to blossom with time, and the visible enthusiastic engagement among participants is hard to ignore. Regarding HPE NonStop and its support of events, a recognizable signature move that identifies the event as a gathering of the NonStop community has to be the buzz emanating from the exhibition area with the first coffee break.

As preparations begin in earnest among NonStop vendors as the annual NonStop TBC 2024 Conference looms, there is a renewed expectation that the buzz surrounding such events is once again recognizable as it is energized. Much has happened in the year since the NonStop community gathered in Denver for the NonStop TBC 2023 Conference. If the only drawcard is to hear about the revised product roadmaps, then that is a success for the organizers. But only after a fashion, as much more additional coverage of NonStop will be provided.

However, even as these preparations continue, it is worth covering all that took place only a few short weeks ago when BITUG held its annual BIG SIG event in London. This took place, as was often done in the past, in Trinity House behind the Tower of London with a clear view of the Tower Bridge. For TCM, it was an opportunity to update the local NonStop community about our service deliveries of the past year and give a further update on our own modernization journey.

“While it might not be exactly on home turf, given the close proximity to Edinburgh, Scotland, a trip south to London, England, doesn’t require any overthinking on the part of TCM,” said TCM Managing Director Daniel Craig. “We continue to welcome every opportunity that comes the way of TCM to interact with the NonStop community on a personal level. This has been the hallmark of TCM since it was formed in 1996, and throughout that time, we have shown how we live and breathe NonStop.”

Even as competing organizations are situated close to each other, it is this lively and professional competition that keeps the NonStop platform front and center of many enterprises business plans. With as much material that has been created of late about Hybrid IT and of the emergence of Private Clouds, there are plenty of new opportunities for TCM.

A highlight of the BITUG BIG SIG 2024 was the educational presentation by Shiva Subramanian, Modernizing Software Development on NonStop – a Practical Example. Facing an almost packed house for those attending the session, this continues to provide surprises. When you consider the ease with which modern development and deployment tools are familiar to all software developers, including graduates fresh out of college, much of the mystique surrounding the NonStop platform is quite simply eloquently debunked. An openly expressed anxiety by IT executives about how to find staff familiar with NonStop can be put to rest as today’s modern NonStop platform has become as easy to integrate into development projects as any open system.

“What continues to surprise us is that with the mystique that surrounds NonStop, much of it is dated and reflects circumstances that are decades old,” said Daniel Craig. “Not surprising then to field as many questions as we have of late from these very same IT executives about how best to leverage the service skills of TCM following the sizable investment TCM has made in its modernization journey. Simply put, this major hurdle that looked insurmountable for so many years has been removed.”

For many traditional NonStop developers, this slide looks more fantasy than reality. However, it is a strong endorsement of the effort the NonStop team has put into ensuring modern, open tools, utilities, and visualization offerings afforded IT professionals on other platforms can be supported on NonStop. However, as most traditional NonStop developers fully know, slideware can only go so far. For TCM, the work Shiva has done these past couple of years has brought in full relief when he turned his presentation around and gave the audience a demonstration using many of the products listed in the opening slide:

What took the audience by surprise was the ease with which Shiva transitioned from one product to the next. It might be argued that few in the NonStop community were familiar with every product exercised in the demonstration. Even so, it wasn’t just the ease of transitions but the power on display – how quickly could new applications be developed on NonStop! It wasn’t hard to miss the real message of this presentation. Today, TCM has the knowledge and experience to help out any IT organization looking to begin its own modernization journey.

Just how much experience does TCM have on hand? “If you count the years since Tony Craig founded TCM in 1996, the company has continued to grow and service the community through numerous transitions of the past,” said Daniel Craig. “Just looking at the skillsets at hand today, we can count on having a total of 341 years of NonStop experience and counting! NonStop celebrating 50 years is very poignant within TCM as, in many cases, that’s all that we have known.” By the time the NonStop TBC 2024 conference begins, this number of our joint NonStop experiences will have grown even larger.
