Continuous modernization

I can no longer count the number of times I read an article on IT and where I think, “Well, we’ve been doing this on NonStop for many years!”. I’m sure many of you have experienced that as well, but it just happened to me recently when reading a Gartner report on “Continuous Modernization”. The concept coined by Gartner warns us that it is a bad idea to throw away legacy applications and start fresh with a new application, instead one should continuously modernize.

In a previous newsletter, I outlined that because a technology is 50 years old, it does not mean its value is irrelevant anymore. Similarly, Gartner argues that it is not because an application is labeled legacy that it has lost its business value and should be ditched. To quote the report: “Use continuous modernization as an alternative to rip-and-replace programs by focusing on specific business obstacles caused by the legacy application (instead of treating legacy applications as a problem to eliminate).  The benefits of continuous modernization versus rip-and-replace are not hard to imagine. A big bang approach is risky, disruptive, and may take a longer time, all things that a business is not ready to accept.

And I cannot resist saying, “We know this very well in our NonStop community!”. When and where? Do you remember the NonStop TBC presentation “The Art of the Possible” from Franz Koenig (If not, you can find it here). In his presentation, Franz highlights this continuous modernization approach, keeping the value of existing business services while being able to adopt modern speed and agility with continuous integration and DevOps while focusing on business outcomes. Another example? In this edition of Connection magazine, read the article from Dale Hiatt from US Foods: “US Foods Utilizes uLinga for Kafka to Access the Kafka Cloud “—another excellent case of continuous modernization.

As we set the course for 2025, HPE NonStop will continue to assist our customers in their modernization efforts, and you can expect 2025 not to disappoint. We start the year by welcoming Neil Davis as NonStop Global Sales Director, bringing his deep and broad experience of NonStop to a worldwide level for the benefit of all of us. You will also find that our NonStop TBC event is renamed to HPE NonStop Technical and Business Conference, as outlined above it is all about business outcomes! And we have very exciting new products you will see coming out this year that I’m sure will help you on your modernization journey. Happy New Year 2025, and stay tuned for a very exciting NonStop new year!

Enjoy!
