News from HPE’s NonStop Division

Dear NonStop community,

This is the time of the year when we reflect on what we’ve accomplished in the year and writing HPE’s newsletter for The Connection magazine is certainly a good opportunity to share that perspective with our community. First, 2023 is going into the records as a fantastic year. The NonStop business is continuously adapting to industry changes and in doing so is able to capitalize on the benefits when they come, such as the growth of the payment transactions volume, and overall digital transformation not only in the payment industry but also in retail, manufacturing, transport, and healthcare.

We adapt by making choices, adopting new technologies, enhancing products, and sometimes dropping others and frankly, the decisions to make are not always obvious and easy. Just observing the dynamics of the Open-Source world is in itself extremely humbling. The emergence of Business Source Licenses for software such as CockroachDB, Terraform, and others tells us building a strong and sustainable business model around Open Source is not straightforward. MariaDB dropping their recently launched Database-as-Service (DBaaS) offering (SkySQL) took analysts by surprise yet shows that even the strongest trends, validated by industry pundits, may have their flaws or limits. The birth of new professions is also very revealing like Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) tasked with maintaining the reliability of cloud deployments, is that to mean that cloud deployments are not as stable and autonomous as one could expect? Similarly, as highlighted in the Hype Cycle for Data Management, 2023 from Gartner, we can see the introduction of “Augmented FinOps” a domain where AI is used to assist budget planning and out of the realization that, in Gartner’s words, “Practitioners are increasingly realizing that cloud is fundamentally a complex cost optimization exercise.“ In this world of increasing complexity, NonStop continues to aim at adding core value to our products and expanding solutions on the platform. In 2023 we accomplished both as illustrated in a few examples shared here.

A New NonStop solution

In the realm of solutions and in response to real customer pain shared by many is our Digital Resilience solution. It is estimated that by 2031, a ransomware attack on a business, consumer, or device will occur every two seconds, resulting in a total cost of $265 billion1. Indeed, it is something no one can ignore. The NIST recommendations provide a good starting point, and you can find that the solution outlined requires combining our well-known security measures along with recovery plans. We’re also very familiar with NonStop solutions for disaster recovery. Leveraging the knowledge shared between our customers, partners, and HPE, along with our rich product portfolio, creating a solution was just a matter of working together as a team, as we often do. The Ransomware recovery architecture for HPE NonStop is now available, and a prototype was demonstrated at our HPE booth at the NonStop TBC conference in Denver. More Product value

On the products front, we should celebrate that 2023 will be remembered as the year when NonStop made its first official steps into the public cloud with the release of  HPE NonStop Development Environment (HPE NSDevEnv) available in AWS and Azure. A first which, of course, calls for more to come…. Developers are millions out there, and it is important to take good care of them – what better way to assist them than simply making their application framework more robust so that they can focus on business logic. If you are not familiar already, check our latest additions to the software stack: HPE NonStop API Gateway, HPE NSHTTP Server, HPE NSIMC, HPE NSJ 11, HPE NSJSP, HPE NonStop TS/MP, all saw new versions with exciting new features. Recently, we also bumped our Python release from 3.6 to 3.11. The innovation of the Open-Source ecosystem but with the strength of NonStop.

You will find many other success stories in this “Best of NonStop” edition of The Connection. The industry reminds us that we cannot take anything for granted, but at the same time, I sense that NonStop continues to be unstoppable!

Enjoy!
