News from HPE’s NonStop Division

Of solutions and services that are always performing their duty

Hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy!

Cool technology! When did we last hear about that? Well, the world is changing. Customers are looking for “solutions,” use them and “pay by the drink.” “It doesn’t matter what’s underneath” is the oft-repeated phrase or so it seems. Well, really?

In this world of “always-on”, “always connected”, “always processing”, “always available”, “always ….” – how to make a solution or a service “always” is a problem that NonStop started to solve more than 4 decades ago. As IT technologies evolve, the need for the “always” capability comes in its new form and today it is the need to be “always” while running in the cloud. A new (?) software paradigm called “micro services” has evolved which tries to address these needs, among other things. So, when you have NonStop in the cloud, although limited to only private cloud now, and deploy your workload on that, you have already addressed the “always” need while using either the traditional software design or the micro services based design. Isn’t that a strong enough value proposition for Virtualized NonStop (or vNS as we call it in short)? One could also compare the classic Pathway design where a control module (“pathmon”) monitors, and orchestrates a large number of service instances (“processes“) to the micro services design where a control module (“kubernetes”) does something similar for “containers.” How about that?

In this edition of “The Connection,” we have a number of interesting articles and “food for thought.” Richard Buckle and Margo Holen write about how the world has evolved from real to the virtual, happily coexisting, making Virtualized NonStop a logical evolution for a time-tested platform. Khody Khodayari’s article on the future of money will make you think again about whether you should prefer Gold or Bitcoin. Peter Grendel’s article on the factory of the future is an insightful read on why innovation never stops at the century-old automobile industry and how vNS makes that possible. Justin Simonds, in his inimitable style, has written about why NonStop X wins for both customers and HPE. Thomas Gloerfeld brings out important aspects of why data security is an important consideration while moving to cloud. Apart from these, there are articles on new product capabilities and new solutions from our indomitable solution partners Infrasoft, 4Tech software, and Gravic. For the managers in the new “working remote” age, there is an enchanting article by Gaye Clemson on how the philosophy of “management by walking around” can be applied to today’s world where managers and employees work remotely for the most part.

So, what else is happening at HPE?

HPE Discover 2022 is from June 28th to 30th. The HPE NonStop is going to have a big presence this time and I’m sure you all would love it. HPE NonStop will be featured in 4 demos – GreenLake for Payments, Smart Manufacturing, Data analytics & real-time cloud integration, and Database as a Service. Apart from these, there are a number of NonStop-related sessions at this year’s Discover. If you are still looking for reasons to plan your late June Las Vegas visit, hope you got them! See https://www.hpe.com/us/en/discover.html to find out more.

Registrations for NonStop Technical Bootcamp 2022 are open. We are looking forward to meeting the NonStop community in person after a long gap of 2 years (fingers crossed!). The NonStop product management team is working on putting together a tasteful set of topics and content – to catch up on what we have done in the meantime and what we plan to do in the future.

Before I wrap up, this letter is incomplete without my tribute to Karen Copeland. She was a large part of this community and was the one who brought me in. The “show must go on” and she has given us what it takes to keep going. Thank you, Karen! You will be missed.
