Scottish pragmatism runs deep. The typical Scotsman is averse to the trivial and to the speculative so much so that the more focused a Scotsman might be, the greater their perceived value. It was a Scotsman that invented the steam engine and it was a Scotsman that invented color television. It was also a dour Scotsman that came up with the lifesaving antibiotic, Penicillin. Then there is Scotch Whisky that needs no further explanation. Where such pragmatism has taken them is to address modernization in the context of not only perceived value but also deliverables that can be readily leveraged across all levels of society.
In May 20, 2026, David Whitehouse, Chief Executive of the newly formed Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), said he favored a pragmatic ongoing access to hometown oil and gas. “A refreshed energy strategy within the first 100 days would send a clear signal that government is serious about backing a modern industrial Scotland, secured by homegrown energy – bringing down costs, unlocking investment and keeping industry here.” Controversial as an energy proposal might be these days, it was clear that for Whitehouse, pragmatism equated to common sense.
Scotland’s transition to modernize its oil and gas extraction while supporting the green transition balances managed decline with pragmatic economic viability. The modernization framework in Scotland is heavily focused on infrastructure preservation, energy security, and an orderly workforce transition away from fossil fuels. It is easy to apply these words to the current state of Nonstop and in particular, to the need for Nonstop customers to turn to Specialized Managed Service Providers (MSP), including TCM Solutions.
What TCM has been observing of late is the relentless drive for operational efficiency has normalized a dangerous trend: the consolidation of disparate IT services under a single, generalist MSP. Heralded for providing a “one-stop shop” service model, on the surface such a service is intuitively compelling, promising an end to the “vendor sprawl” that has historically plagued large-scale organizations. This model offers the seductive simplicity of one contract, one point of contact, and one bill, ostensibly streamlining accountability.
The fundamental conflict at the heart of the one-stop-shop model
is the assumption that IT management is a commoditized service
where breadth of coverage is equivalent to quality of care.
Yet, when this generalist mandate is extended
into the specialized domain of HPE Nonstop,
the logic of consolidation collapses.
HPE Nonstop systems are designed “around a unique architecture that ensures no downtime and no data loss, a DNA that has been meticulously refined over five decades,” said TCM’s Andy Vasey. “Treating these systems as just another server in a generalist’s portfolio is not merely a service level mismatch; it is a direct threat to the operations, revenue, and reputation of the business.” The primary justification for IT consolidation is cost reduction, yet a granular analysis of the financial impact of downtime in 2024 and 2025 reveals that the “one-stop shop” model is often more expensive in the long term.
In high-stakes sectors like finance, telecommunications,
and brokerage/trading, the financial bleed from an outage is non-linear.
Consumers are increasingly impatient;
for instance, consumers typically wait only seven minutes
during a payment disruption before abandoning a purchase entirely.
More critical still and something pragmatists frequently reference, radiating well beyond the Scottish border, “A generalist MSP, whose primary metric for success is “Response SLA” – the time it takes for a technician to acknowledge a ticket—is fundamentally incompatible with these financial realities. For a Nonstop user, the only metrics that matters, is “Zero Downtime,” a goal that requires proactive maintenance and predictive analytics that generalists simply do not prioritize.
These observations are covered in a new white paper by Andy Vasey, “Is your ‘One-Stop Shop’ Managed Service Putting your HPE Nonstop Environment at Risk?” copies of which will become available shortly for downloading from the TCM website.
Pragmatism isn’t solely the domain of MSP. From a TCM perspective it also applies to the productization of a tool TCM specialist have relied on for some time. Before any recommendations can be brought forward, these TCM specialists need to ascertain what is running on Nonstop, what resources are being consumed along with how these resources are configured and then, perhaps most important of all, the performance levels currently being achieved.
One development that may be new to members of the Nonstop community is the availability of the product TCM Optimiser+ even as it’s proving popular to those now familiar with its capabilities. Taking a pragmatic approach to understanding key metrics generated by Nonstop and available for review by Nonstop customers, is of paramount importance. The design center of TCM Optimiser+ targets the key metrics related to overall performance, configuration and health of the Nonstop integrated hardware / software / solution stack. It automatically analyzes complex system metrics, provides independent validation for infrastructure investments, and translates technical metrics into non-technical, business-focused reports.
Among the key features and benefits of TCM Optimiser+:
- System Health Assessment: Scans systems to identify performance bottlenecks and potential configuration issues.
- Business-Centric Reporting: Converts deep technical telemetry into clear, leadership-friendly reporting that justifies IT and infrastructure investment.
- Independent Assurance: Provides an objective, external validation of system health, training, or tooling upgrades
- Trend Analysis: Tracks improvements in system efficiency over time to optimize secondary storage, backup infrastructure, and resource building towards a roadmap for continuous improvement
- The ethos around the TCM Optimiser+ program is assist system managers in understanding where they are now and how to get to where they want to be.

Where pragmatism pays dividends is with TCM’s ongoing sponsorship of major Nonstop events. The Nonstop Technology & Business Conference, 2026 (NonstopTBC26) is coming up very soon and for the majority of members of the Nonstop community, this means travelling to Orlando, Florida for this September 15 – 17, 2026 event. TCM is proud to be a Platinum Sponsor of this event and invites you to stop by to see us and to exchange ideas with the TCM team that, for NonstopTBC26, will include Daniel Craig, Collin Yates, Ian Horrocks, Shiva Subramanian and Andy Vassey.
As a team we are looking forward to meeting you at NonstopTBC26 but if you need information about our managed services and product offerings and the help we can provide for any modernization project, then feel free to reach out to us at https://tcm.co.uk/
