For the better part of the past two centuries, there is barely a time when modernization isn’t the subject of conversation. Attend any gallery opening, any new musical or any open house and very quickly the conversation turns to whether or not the item represents modernism. In other words, is it an indicator of things to come or is it just more of the same.
HPE Virtualized NonStop started as just a concept and challenge to the NonStop development team. Andy Bergholz, if you remember him, had sent the team off for some virtualization training and just asked “Could NonStop be virtualized”? “No”, “Never” “Of course not” “Why”? But then, as Andy suspected, there started a lot of “Well, what if…” conversations and in just a little while they had booted NonStop under OpenStack. That’s the way great leaders get things done
NonStop has always been driven by business solutions and therefore when the new Data Solutions organisation was formed this was a natural fit for NonStop.
HPE’s Data Solutions business under Jeff Kyle is accountable for creating and delivering differentiated transaction processing and in-memory data analytics solutions for HPC, AI, structured data, and unstructured data for financial services, manufacturing, transportation, and retail segments via PaaS & SaaS.
SMCC, as a pioneer in Japan for Visa, has been in the payment service business for over 50 years and is one of Japan’s leading financial services companies with annual card transaction volume of over $ 180 billion. SMCC has been using the HPE NonStop server for several generations since 1983 for authorization operations that require the highest availability, reliability, and real-time processing performance.
After the successful upgrade I got the idea to use these servers and learn how to setup vNS on VMware. I managed to get two of these eight servers for my home LAB with the CPUs, RAMs, HDDs and the NICs. The server components were not enough to build a vNS , according to the Hardware architecture guide for HPE Virtualized NonStop on VMware. I had to spend few thousand dollars to buy the missing components like Mellanox ConnectX-4 cards, upgrade RAMs, etc…
Since the origin of computing, innovation has been happening in broadly two areas – 1) Technology – silicon, circuits, storage and so forth, aptly captured by “Moore’s law”, and 2) software – operating system, application, virtualization and the like. While these two areas continue to evolve, although at a slower pace than earlier, the last decade brought in another dimension to the innovation phenomenon –acquisition and consumption. Until the first decade of the 21st century, computing infrastructure was all captive. Companies built sprawling datacenters to house their IT infrastructure, managed by their staff – highly skilled to run operations and keep the “lights on”, if you will.
