You look around you
Things they astound you
So breathe in deep
You’re not asleep
Open your mind Moody Blues: “Days of Future Passed”
There comes a time when you do need to break with tradition. As much as we are reminded of keeping our eyes firmly on the horizon, there are also those times when we can learn from what has already taken place. Looking to the future, as some pundits may remind us, can be hazardous to our health but there is nothing mystical or unexpected arising from musing on the past. When it comes to events and conferences, there is always something of value to be gained through further introspection.
TCM is not about self-analysis or self-inspection but like all members of the NonStop community there are times when we clearly identify with those who state that yes, they have seen all of this in the past. Shared information is spared misjudgment: Nothing says it’s all good to go than newly gained insights. And for the TCM team, exposed as it is to what many within the NonStop community pursue, the value being provided by our team is deeply rooted in the shared experiences. Nowhere is this more in evidence than when we come away from NonStop community gatherings, particularly those held at the Regional User Group (RUG) and indeed, the global level as is the case in Europe and the US.
Fast forward to today and the RUG gatherings continue to provide value and their focus on all things NonStop has not been diluted in any way. We may call the evenings an opportunity to network and each country has embraced something different, but the opportunity so provided to mingle has proved as popular as it was in the very beginning. Here at TCM we not only attend as many RUG events as is feasibly possible, supporting these gatherings with presentations anchored in our observations of the NonStop customer, we are ardent adherers to any and every opportunity to mingle where the story of NonStop can be retold.
For 2025, whether our support for RUGs took us down under to Australia or to the vast rugged landscape of Canada and yes, places in between, the time has come to move beyond preparedness for the upcoming E-BITUG event in Dublin. What has been central to our presentations of late has been the emphasis TCM places on modernization. In the past, there was never any simple way to get to Canada let alone Australia but now it has come down to getting on a plane. Modernization of travel is obvious and the results is that communities, including the NonStop community can enjoy a closeness unthinkable half a century ago.
This community closeness and the willingness to engage in conversations led to Daniel Craig, TCM Managing Director, extolling the benefits when he said recently that “TCM had a wonderful time at our first OZTUG event. The sense of community down under was extremely strong, which made for an enjoyable and engaging conference.” Travel may have been subject to modernization over an extended timeframe but when it comes to technology, modernization hits hard and fast. The lament over a lack of COBOL programmers is not so much a cry for additional headcount so much as it is a nostalgic cry over a disappearing legacy that we now associate with Information Technology (IT). For the NonStop community, the journey from proprietary, to industry standard to open source has not come as a surprise, as along with modernity, is the necessity of accelerated development.
When it comes to what to expect to hear from TCM, look for TCM’s Shiva Subramanian providing an informative update on NonStop support of Kernel Level Threading (KLT). In this, his latest presentation, Shiva will examine what will likely follow with the introduction and then the impact that Kernel-Level Threads (KLT) will have in the HPE NonStop environment. “We will be discussing how KLT enhances system performance, enabling better parallelism, responsiveness, and efficient CPU utilization. Through a detailed comparison with earlier threading models, we’ll highlight the significant improvements in application throughput and ease of migration,” said Shiva.
More important still? It is a classic example of how modern programming methodologies, languages and utilities drive innovation and productivity and it’s evident to TCM from the discussions we are now having that the more NonStop embraces modernity, the better the story is for a longer presence of NonStop within the enterprise. And this is a key insight into what many within the NonStop community, sharing experiences and looking to see what strides HPE has made with the evolution of NonStop. “Surely, as Starship nears official launch,” said Daniel Craig, “these new NonStop converged systems will be welcomed by NonStop customers as they support through integration modern server technologies.”
Greater awareness of what is new and how modern NonStop has become, together with a better sense about the commitment HPE is making to NonStop bodes well for the longevity of NonStop. But as much as we talk about the insights we can gain from the conversations we have, when applied to the experience we have gained through previous migrations, when it comes to the Starship converged systems that are delivered, configured, inserted into our IT deployments, theoretical insights may no longer be enough.
“In today’s dynamic digital world, truly understanding the health and configuration of your mission-critical NonStop systems is essential. That’s why we’ve developed InSight from TCM, a rapid assessment tool designed to provide a clear and precise view of your environment,” said TCM’s Andy Vasey. “TCM InSight offers a streamlined approach to understanding your system’s current state, highlighting areas for optimization and improvement. We recognized a need for more than just data. We wanted a tool that could initiate meaningful dialogue, quickly and comprehensively analyzing your NonStop systems, and delivering actionable insights without disruptive, lengthy processes. Let’s move beyond “we’ve always done it this way” and discover the solutions InSight can suggest.”
We have the opportunity to fly to all four corners of the globe; unbelievable opportunities not afforded our parents and grandparents. When there are times where we lament the past there is also no escaping the impact modernization has had on our culture, our business endeavors and life in general. When it comes to RUG events then, for TCM the value is inescapable as the distance is no longer an impediment. There is simply no substitute from time spent with those tasked with deployment and operation of NonStop systems today. Make sure you find the time to hear presentations from TCM as Shiva, Andy, Collin and more will be actively engaging with the NonStop community starting right now in Dublin, Ireland, with E-BITUG kicking off.
Looking forward to seeing you all and yes, to all those crossing the globe, safe travels.
